Having a condition like Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) can be a serious burden. In order to determine whether or not you have a form of sleep apnoea, several symptoms would need to be uncovered.
What is OSA? A Quick OSA Test!
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) means that you have a complete collapse of the airways during sleep. This is different from the causes of regular snoring. With regular snoring, you might be better off using a high-quality snoring mouthguard.
Symptoms for sleep apnea are easy to determine. With a simple checklist, we can uncover a lot about the signs and symptoms of sleep apnea.
The complete checklist consists of the following eight simple questions:
- Do you snore?
- Do you wake with a choking sensation at night?
- Does your partner (or other people) report that you have breathing pauses during sleep?
- Do you wake feeling unrefreshed?
- Do you suffer for excessive sleepiness during the day?
- Do you have moring headaches?
- Do you have poor memory or concentration?
- Are you a restless sleeper?
If you answered YES to most of these questions, you might be suffering from a chronic sleep condition like OSA. This can only be determined by a professional, so I recommend seeing your local physician for a check-up.
Having sleep apnea is completely normal and very treatable, despite being a chronic sleep condition. Over 10% of the adult population in the USA suffers from a form of mild (or severe) sleep apnea.
Major Signs & Symptoms Of Sleep Apnea
Whilst the biggest sign of OSA is related to snoring, the range of symptoms are much broader than that alone.
Signs of sleep apnea in adults is determined by the following factors:
- Severe snoring: If you show habitual and loud snoring, this is a clear sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
- Choking sensations during sleep: Ever suddenly woken up with the sensation of almost having suffocated? This indicates a possible airway collapse, which is the clearest sign of sleep apnea. Not to be confused with suddenly waking up from a bad dream, which is a significantly different sensation.
- Breathing pauses during sleep: If your partner or someone near you (or possibly yourself in a sleep recording) notices irregular breathing and sudden stops in breathing, this can be a sign of OSA. However, this is something that can also occur in a situation of chronic snoring.
- Excessive fatigue: Does your lack of sleep cause you to be fatigued or sleepy all day? This can be a result of your body constantly waking itself up to regain breath at night. Always consult a doctor to determine the exact cause of your daily fatigue.
- Morning headaches: Having headaches even when you’re not hungover from a party the night before? This can indicate that there is something wrong with your sleeping pattern. This could be the result of obstructive sleep apoea.
